Essential Equipment

The basics that make sense for almost every beginner training at home.

Optional Extras

Additional equipment that can make home training more enjoyable or help you develop particular skills as you progress.

BEGINNER TIP

You don't need a punch bag to start learning boxing. Gloves and hand wraps can be enough to begin practising your stance, guard, punches and shadow boxing.

ESSENTIAL EQUIPMENT

If you're new to boxing, we'd recommend starting with just the basics. A suitable pair of boxing gloves and Quick Wraps give you a simple starting point for practising your technique at home, without needing to build a full boxing gym straight away.

beginners boxing gloves

Boxing
Gloves

Your boxing gloves will be one of the main pieces of equipment you use during training, so choosing the right size is important. For home training, we recommend our 12oz or 14oz gloves depending on how you want to train.

Why We Recommend Them

12oz Boxing Gloves

A lighter option that can feel quicker and more responsive during general training, combinations, light bag work and pad work.

14oz Boxing Gloves

A slightly heavier option that provides more protection during training and can be a used to progress into the gym for sparring (light sparring).

Beginner Tip

If you're unsure, don't worry about choosing the "perfect" glove. Think about what type of training you'll be doing and choose the size that best suits your sessions.

Quick
Wraps

Quick Wraps are an easy way for beginners to add hand and wrist support underneath their boxing gloves. They're designed to be quicker and simpler to put on than traditional hand wraps, making them a convenient choice for home training.

Why We Recommend Them

When you're starting out, there can already be a lot to learn — stance, guard, movement and your basic punches. Quick Wraps can make getting ready for a session simpler, so you can spend more time learning and training without getting caught up in complicated equipment.

Beginner Tip

If you eventually want to learn traditional hand wrapping, that's a useful skill to add as your training develops. For getting started at home, Quick Wraps can be a simple place to begin.

USEFUL EQUIPMENT

Once you've got the basics covered, a few extra pieces of equipment can make home training more varied and give you more ways to practise. You don't need all of them — choose the equipment that matches the type of training you enjoy.

Punch
Bag

A punch bag gives you something to practise your punches and combinations on, making it a great addition for beginners who want to bring more practical boxing training into their home workouts.

Why We Recommend Them

A punch bag gives you the opportunity to practise your punches with movement, rhythm and combinations rather than only shadow boxing. Ours is perfect for home use as its max load is 30kg, so wont tear down your home!

Beginner Tip

Don't try to hit the bag as hard as you can. Start with controlled punches, focus on your technique and gradually build your combinations and movement.

SKIPPING
ROPES

Skipping is a simple way to add movement, rhythm and conditioning to your boxing sessions. It takes up very little space and can easily become part of your warm-up or regular home workout.

Why We Recommend Them

You don't need a large home gym or complicated equipment to get started. A skipping rope gives you another way to work on coordination and staying light on your feet while adding variety to your training.

Beginner Tip

If you're new to skipping, don't worry about doing long rounds straight away. Start with small jumps and a steady rhythm, and build your time gradually. And don't worry if you work up a sweat, ours have anti-sweat grips!

Hook &
Jab pads

Hook and jab pads give you another way to practise your punches with a training partner. They can make home sessions more interactive while helping you work on accuracy, combinations and timing.

Why We Recommend Them

.If you have someone to train with, pads can add a completely different feel to your boxing sessions. They're particularly useful once you've started learning your basic punches and want to practise putting them together.

Beginner Tip

Don't worry about speed when you first use pads. Focus on listening to your partner, finding the target and throwing each punch with good technique.

OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT

Once you've built the basics and found a training routine that works for you, you may want to add equipment that focuses on specific parts of your fitness and boxing. These extras aren't essential for getting started, but they can give you more ways to train as you progress.

boxing training ladder

FOOTWORK LADDER

A footwork ladder can add variety to your training by giving you simple movement drills to practise. It's useful for working on coordination, rhythm and moving your feet with purpose.

Why We Recommend Them

Boxing isn't just about throwing punches. Being able to move your feet, change direction and stay balanced is an important part of learning to box, and a ladder can make practising movement more engaging.

Beginner Tip

Don't try to rush through the ladder. Start with simple patterns and concentrate on staying balanced and controlled before increasing your speed.

HEAD SPEED BALL

A head speed ball is a fun way to add another challenge to your home training. It can help you practise hand-eye coordination, timing and rhythm while keeping your sessions varied.

Why We Recommend Them

It's not something you need to learn the basics of boxing, but it can be a great addition once you're comfortable with your punches and want to challenge your coordination and timing.

Beginner Tip

Start slowly. The aim isn't to hit the ball as fast as possible — focus on watching it, timing your punches and keeping a steady rhythm.

PUSH-UP BOARD

A push-up board can add simple strength exercises to your home boxing routine, giving you another way to work on your upper-body fitness alongside your boxing practice.

Why We Recommend Them

Boxing training involves more than punching. Adding simple strength exercises can help you build a more rounded home workout, especially when you don't have access to a full gym.

Beginner Tip

Don't sacrifice good form just to do more repetitions. Start with a level that feels manageable and build gradually.

AB
ROLLER

An ab roller can add another challenge to your home fitness routine by focusing on your core. It's an optional piece of equipment for people who want to add dedicated core exercises alongside their boxing training.

Why We Recommend Them

A strong, controlled core is useful in boxing because your movements involve your whole body, but you don't need an ab roller to learn the fundamentals. It's better viewed as an extra fitness tool as your training develops.

Beginner Tip

Start with short, controlled movements rather than trying to roll as far as possible. Focus on maintaining control throughout the exercise.
