How to Choose the Right Boxing Gloves: Beginner Edition
Boxing gloves and their weights in oz can be confusing to start with, check out our table below for an easy to use guide:
12oz Boxing gloves
If you're relatively light and mainly hitting bags and pads, 12 oz gloves can feel comfortable and responsive. However, they usually aren't ideal for sparring because they provide less cushioning for your partner, but perfect for practising speed, accuracy and technique.
Think of them as: Training gloves focused on speed and technique.
14oz Boxing gloves
Many beginners choose 14 oz because they're an "all-rounder." If you're not sure what to buy and your gym allows them for your intended use, they're often a good middle ground, balance of technique and light sparring.
Think of them as: The great all rounder of boxing gloves.
16oz Boxing gloves
If you're planning to spar, many gyms require 16 oz gloves regardless of your weight. The extra padding helps protect your hands and reduces the impact on your training partner.
Think of them as: Safety-focused training gloves.
Beginner Boxing Gloves for Adults
Adult beginners should choose boxing gloves with comfortable padding, strong wrist support, and durability for regular training.
Bag Gloves vs Sparring Gloves
Bag gloves are designed for punch bag training, while sparring gloves offer additional padding for partner training sessions.
Choosing the Right Glove Weight
Glove weight depends on body size and training goals. Most beginners train using 12oz, 14oz, or 16oz gloves.
